Red Light Therapy: Potential Benefits
Red light therapy has been extensively researched for its potential benefits in addressing various health issues. Whether you seek to improve sleep, support skin health, reduce the appearance of fine lines, boost your mood, enhance exercise recovery, promote hair health, or improve overall wellness, red light therapy is a powerful tool to add to your routine. Explore our range of devices designed to help you achieve your health goals!
What is Red Light Therapy?
Also known as photobiomodulation (PBM), red light therapy is a non-invasive treatment that delivers specific frequencies of red and near-infrared light to your skin and cells. Our red light therapy panel utilizes only clinically therapeutic red and near-infrared wavelengths, ensuring you receive benefits without harmful UV rays or side effects.
Benefits of Red Light Therapy
Skin Health
Red light therapy can assist with acne, acne scarring, eczema, psoriasis, and sun damage. Additionally, it reduces wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots.
Stress Management and Brain Health
Red light therapy modulates brain activity and reduces inflammation, helping to calm the nervous system and offer relief from anxiety. It promotes relaxation and lowers cortisol levels, while also reducing oxidative stress by enhancing antioxidant production. This therapy improves neurogenesis and synaptogenesis, which can enhance memory, learning, and creativity. Small studies suggest positive effects on dementia and autoimmune conditions such as encephalitis and multiple sclerosis.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
Red light therapy can effectively treat SAD, a type of depression occurring during winter months. It mimics sunlight, which is often lacking, and studies have shown it can be as effective as antidepressants for this condition.
Fat Loss
Red light therapy may aid fat loss in various ways. Research indicates it can boost metabolism and serve as a non-invasive method for body sculpting and cellulite reduction in targeted areas.
Muscle Repair and Performance
This therapy helps with healing and performance by reducing inflammation and aiding in muscle injuries while decreasing injury risk. It stimulates cells, increasing energy production and improving cell function, which enhances blood flow to muscles, speeding recovery and improving endurance.
Muscle Growth
Red light therapy can increase muscle mass and strength by improving blood flow, reducing inflammation, and stimulating muscle repair. One study found that red light therapy increased muscle growth by 50 per cent compared to training alone, while another study showed significant improvements in muscle thickness and strength of over 50 per cent when combined with exercise.
Pain Management
Red light therapy can alleviate pain by increasing cell energy production, which releases endorphins. It can help with muscle soreness after exercise and promote healing from injuries.
Joint Health
This therapy can relieve joint pain, arthritis pain, tendon pain, swelling, and stiffness. It induces biochemical changes that reduce inflammation and encourage cellular proliferation, enhancing joint mobility and flexibility. It is particularly effective for conditions like osteoarthritis and is a non-invasive treatment option for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD), helping to reduce pain and inflammation from jaw muscle tension.
Sleep
Red light therapy can assist with insomnia and improve alertness for night shift workers by regulating your body's circadian rhythm. Using red light therapy in the evening may boost melatonin production, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.
Women’s Health
This therapy can help regulate the endocrine system, balancing hormones, stabilizing mood, and reducing PMS symptoms.
Men’s Health
Studies suggest that red and near-infrared light wavelengths can stimulate Leydig cells, which produce testosterone in the testicles. This increased energy production can naturally enhance testosterone levels and restore erectile function for those with erectile dysfunction (ED).
Safety Measures
Red light therapy is generally safe, with most individuals experiencing no adverse effects. Minor side effects, such as mild discomfort or skin redness, may occur. However, major contraindications include diseases affecting the retina of the eye, such as diabetes, as well as the use of photosensitizing medications like lithium, melatonin, phenothiazine antipsychotics, and certain antibiotics.
People with photosensitivity (like from conditions such as Lupus) or with a history of skin cancer should also consult their health care provider and do their own research before using red light therapy.
If you are pregnant, please consult your health care provider before using RLT. RLT is also to be avoided if you have any open wounds or lesions on your skin.
